Meet Sarah & Daniel
A California couple who traded the Silicon Valley hustle for the serene beauty of Baja California Sur over a decade ago.

The waters that changed everything
Our first dive in Cabo Pulmo National Park, 2014
How It All Began
Back in 2014, Sarah and I were living what many would call the dream life in San Francisco. She was a marketing director for a tech startup, and I was working as a software engineer at a well-known company. We had the careers, the apartment with a view, the weekend brunches. But something was missing.
That year, we took a week-long vacation to Los Cabos, our first trip to Baja. On our fourth day, we drove up the dusty East Cape road to a tiny village called Cabo Pulmo. A local divemaster convinced us to try our first scuba dive in the national park. What we saw beneath those turquoise waters changed everything.
Schools of jacks so thick they blocked out the sun. Curious sea lions performing underwater acrobatics around us. Massive groupers that looked like they belonged in a different era. We learned this place had been a dead zone in the 1990s, overfished and depleted. But the local community had made the bold decision to ban all fishing and turn it into a marine reserve. Within 20 years, the biomass had increased by over 460%. It was living proof that conservation works.
The Big Move
We returned to San Francisco different people. The contrast between our daily grind and the slower, more intentional pace of life we'd experienced in Baja was jarring. Over the next year, during countless dinner conversations, we kept coming back to the same question: What if we actually did it?
In December 2015, we packed up our lives into a storage unit, said goodbye to friends and family, and drove south across the border with our two rescue dogs, Luna and Cisco. We rented a small house in La Paz and gave ourselves six months to figure it out. Ten years later, we're still here.
"The best decision we ever made wasn't just about moving to paradise. It was about choosing a life that aligned with our values: community, conservation, and meaningful experiences over material accumulation."
— Sarah Martinez-Reynolds
Why We Started This Site
For years, friends and family would visit us, and we'd play tour guide. We knew the hidden beaches, the family-owned restaurants where locals actually eat, the dive sites, the hiking trails, the best time to see whale sharks. After our tenth "You should write a blog!" suggestion, we finally did.
But Cabo Pulmo isn't just a travel blog. It's our love letter to this region that gave us a second chance at life. We named it after the place that started it all, the tiny village with the big conservation story that inspired us to make the leap.
Living here has taught us that true luxury isn't about thread count or Michelin stars, though we certainly appreciate those things. It's about having the time to watch a sunrise without checking your phone. It's about knowing the names of the people who grow your food. It's about swimming with sea turtles on a Tuesday afternoon because you can.
What We Believe
After a decade of exploring Baja and beyond, we've developed some strong opinions about travel:
- Slow down: You don't need to see everything. Pick a few places and really experience them. Some of our best memories come from spending a week in a small town, not rushing between five destinations.
- Support local: The family-owned hotel might not have a website, but it probably has better stories. The taco stand with no sign often has the best fish tacos. We prioritize locally-owned businesses in every guide we write.
- Respect the environment: This region's beauty is fragile. We only recommend businesses and experiences that actively protect the environment, not just those that claim to.
- Learn the culture: We've spent ten years learning Spanish (Sarah's is much better than mine), understanding Mexican customs, and immersing ourselves in this culture. We encourage every visitor to do the same.
Today
These days, you'll find us splitting our time between our home in La Paz and extended stays in different parts of Baja and mainland Mexico. Sarah handles most of the writing and photography, while I manage the technical side and contribute guides about diving, hiking, and adventure travel.
We still dive in Cabo Pulmo regularly, often taking visitors on their first trip to see the reef that changed our lives. Luna and Cisco are older now, preferring beach naps to long hikes, but they're still up for any adventure.
Every guide we write comes from personal experience. We don't accept paid placements or sponsored content. If we recommend a restaurant, hotel, or experience, it's because we genuinely think you'll love it as much as we do.
